EGGER always has its finger on the pulse

Laminate flooring as a fashion product

26.09.2007

Trends come and go. With this in mind, the EGGER design team takes its inspiration from international lifestyles and is influenced by new directions in taste and fashion, which it incorporates into its laminate flooring collections.

The positive developments in the global laminate flooring market in general and EGGER in particular are not just down to chance. The creative and innovative ideas of the last few years have enjoyed an equally creative and innovative transformation. Easy to lay, varied decors and surfaces, hard-wearing and durable: these factors are making laminate flooring more popular.

Trend scouts are out and about
EGGER pays special attention to research into design trends in international markets. "Trend scouting" is becoming more and more important. The starting point are intensive talks with customers, in other words the floor installers, interior decorators and distributors, who contribute their experiences with their users. Likewise suppliers, printing companies and veneer manufacturers inspire generations of new collections. Finally, the international lifestyle and furnishings trade fairs encourage creative initiatives and have a considerable influence on the development of new trends. From this wealth of information, EGGER develops its own, exclusive ideas that stand out against the collections of its competitors.

Today, the application areas for laminate flooring are varied as never before. In creating new decors it is absolutely vital to consider the different application areas. It is obvious that floor coverings for exhibition halls must have a different look than those for domestic living rooms.

Varied collections for every lifestyle
The laminate flooring market offers an ever broader choice. The EGGER FLOORLINE, emotion, Vivo nature and Feelwood collections offer varied floors that combine nature with exciting contrasts.

There's a choice between the natural decors of fruit woods, such as Wild Cherry and Pear Tree, or conjure up paradise in your living room with exotic woods like Rio Palisander and Java Teak of the Vivo nature collection.

For those who prefer a modern designer feel, the Woodstock decor of the FLOORLINE collection will fit the bill precisely. Another highlight from the FLOORLINE collection is the matt Catánia Oak decor. It's just the job for public areas such as exhibition halls, shops and fairs.

As well as the recent trend towards darker woods, a pronounced "reverse trend" is now becoming increasingly apparent. Very light, white or sand-coloured looks combined with wood are enjoying their moment in the limelight. A current example is the White Wood decor of the new emotion KINGSIZE collection.

Individuality is the highest priority for a customer. A laminate floor must exude personality and perfectly reflect its surroundings. The desire for more individuality means more extreme variations are possible. This is expressed on the one hand in the colouring, and on the other through the use of lively, striking surfaces. Increasingly, blackened oaks or woods with interesting features, such as knots and sapwood, can be seen, which radiate natural individuality.

Now as before, it's also important to note that customers tend to want inspiring, very natural effects. The emphasis here is not on rustic effects, but rather a certain naturalness. Designs that are too elegant may appear too artificial for consumers. The new decors therefore frequently contain heartwood, knots and also deeply brushed effects. A play of colours may also produce a lively effect – individual planks show greater differences in colour to again underline again their naturalness.

The perfect overall appearance of a laminate floor is often rounded off by two or four-sided Woodvision edge bevels. These highlight the natural, striking impression. The bevels are used mainly for more rustic decors, although they also come into their own with more elegant types of wood. Woodvision produces an overall look, combining decor, surface and bevelling.

New formats for wood, stone and metal decors
The number of tile versions has also expanded significantly. New and especially popular are effects where individual tiles are laid directly next to each other. This leaves the smallest of joints, which makes the floor look even more realistic. In this context, the issue of format becomes more and more important. Certain woods and effects, including the stone and metal decors, only look their best on the right size of board. For the perfect combination of decor and format, EGGER also offers a MEDIUM format at 1292 x 134 mm and a KINGSIZE format at 1292 x 326 mm to supplement the traditional sizes. Oblong tiles are now also available, for example in the Jaipur slate decor of the emotion KINGSIZE collection. This range also contains the fashionable tarnished metal look. The Metallica decor in various colours has the same effect as the popular concrete decors: lively and natural.

The demands of customers with respect to floors have changed over the last few years. Nowadays, it is no longer just the longevity of the floor that is most important, its visual impact is becoming increasingly significant. Laminate flooring is being used more and more as a design element, similar to wallpaper. It is because of this that the character and form of a floor are always having to be adapted to suit the prevailing trends.
